The real life of a photographer: Ophelia behind the scenes

One of the things I love about weddings and editorial photography is how perfect the journey to the end result can be.   All of the planning and energy that goes into each wedding and editorial reflects the hard work of the bride and groom and creative team of professionals.    It’s my job to capture all of this hard work, and the photos appear effortless.  Most often the behind the scenes hard-work and myself can show the raw realness of what goes into capturing these moments.  I recently came across a few photos of me in action and I laughed.  Seriously, I have a big sense of humor and I really believe being able to laugh at yourself is a great thing.  A few things I learned from these images;

1. I have a strange sense of style.  Sometimes I get it right dressed up and other times I look like pretty disheveled.  Thank god for Marion and Carly from Ma-Luxe do my hair and makeup from time to time.

2. I can contort my body into some pretty interesting positions and small spaces.  This comes in handy with wrapping myself around furniture or weird angles to capture the perfect photo.

3. I am not afraid of heights.  I will climb ladders, scale rock walls, and stand on rooftops to get the perfect photo.

4. I’m not against lying on the ground anywhere to capture the image I desire to take.  Although in that moment I can tell you that I am so hyper focused I have no idea I am  doing this.  That is why these images are particularly funny to me.

Photo of me shooting in a New York city taxi:

Last year I had the opportunity to capture Trevor Linden (former Captain of the Vancouver Canucks).  Mr. Linden was photographed at 601 Herald.  A luxury pet friendly condo residence in Victoria BC.   He was photographed with one of my favorite pooches in the world…Marions puppy Finnegan.

Me letting Finnegan know that he would be just as popular as Mr. Linden.  Finnegan has a little bit of an ego:).

She shoots, she scores!!!

Believe it our not this is a swamp in Steveston BC.  One of my favorite locations to shoot.

Capturing Bettina!!! One of my favorite brides.

No Fear of heights for me…..this image doesn’t show the real height here….so I will let you imagine this.

Learning Strobe lighting with a massive soft box for the first time at 2:00 am in morning!  I don’t recommend learning on the job, but we got it done.  PHEW!!!!!

Editorial for The Fairmont Empress – Bengal Lounge.

Here I am trying to teach the groom and his men how to look cool in a photograph!  hahaha.

It’s not everyday I shoot in faux fur, fishnets and heels…..but its also not everyday I am in New York City for an engagement shoot.

First shoot in Ma-Luxe studios…..A-MAZ-ING!!!!!

Told ya!  disheveled hippie…..

Posing queen in Whistler BC…walking through the village is one of the most amazing things!!!

Mike and I shooting in Tandem.

Squishing myself into the small spaces are always worth it!

Umm pretty sure the bride and groom are in the opposite direction.  I must have been capturing something gorgeous in nature.

Photographer and bouquet holder….go hand and hand.

All and all I love what I do and I hope you enjoyed the little glimpse into what I do behind the scenes to get the photos you see in the end.

I am so excited to announce that Ophelia Photography has become an Official Sponsor for the 5th annual Fashion with Passion for the Women In Need Community Cooperative.   Ophelia Photography is also working in partnership with Ma-luxe & The Studio Collective to help organize the Fashion With Passion special event and silent auction on May 11th, 2013!

At Women In Need, we support women along their journey between crisis, financial self sufficiency and wellness. The programs are designed to be there for a woman along each step of their journey.

They collect donated goods and provide affordable high quality clothing, household items and furniture through three Resale Shops in Victoria, BC. The revenue from their shops – together with financial donations – covers the costs of running their non-profit cooperative and funding our empowerment programs for women.

Ophelia Photography is apart of the Ma-Luxe Studio collective.   I fully support Marion Groot – Ma-Luxe Editor and chief with our collective mission statement, ” to make women look and feel their most beautiful. We believe in the experience of beauty… Every woman can and should be able to enjoy and indulge in the act of feeling glamorous on a daily basis.
